So, if you are overweight, is it your fault – or theirs?
Conventional nutritionists will invariably tell you, if you are overweight, it’s your own fault: you are eating too much or not exercising enough – usually both. But are they right? In my experience, nobody wants to be overweight. You get ridiculed, stared at, are embarrassed to be seen in a bathing costume on the beach. In other words, you live a generally less happy life.
It may not be your fault at all if you are doing what you are told. That’s because the ‘healthy’ recommendation that a low-fat diet is the best way to lose weight bears no resemblance to what our evolutionary history and more recent evidence says we should be eating to lose weight. It must surely play a part as evidence from epidemiological studies and clinical, controlled hospital-based trials have consistently shown for the last 140 years that the best diet for weight loss, or not to get overweight in the first place, is one that is very high in fats and with not a lot of carbohydrate – the exact opposite of what you are told.
This has not gone unnoticed. According to a report published in 1997 by Drs Heini and Weinsier:
‘Reduced fat and calorie intake and frequent use of low-calorie food products have been associated with a paradoxical increase in the prevalence of obesity.’5
